Glycyrrhyza glabra syn. Liquiritia officinalis

Licorice

The ingredient of one of the world’s favorite sweets, licorice is used for fatigue, particularly adrenal stress, and has protective effects on brain cells. It is often used to disguise the bitter tastes of Western plant medicines or drugs with sweetness.

About the plant: A perennial from Eurasia, northern Africa, and western Asia, it likes full sun and does not survive winter in colder regions. Growing to 5 feet (1.5 m) with pinnate leaves and pale pink-purple flowers, it is the roots (stolons or suckers) that are harvested and dried in autumn for use as sticks.

History and folklore: The botanical name comes from the Greek for sweet and root, and around 2000 BC the Egyptian pharaohs chewed sticks and took it as a sweet drink. It was used in the first century by physician Dioscorides, who told Roman soldiers to chew the root to allay thirst. Also known as gan cao in traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed to harmonize other ingredients in a formula. Used in traditional Japanese medicine and in Ayurvedic medicine for rejuvenation, and by Western medical herbalists for adrenal insufficiency and as a restorative tonic (being immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial). Researched since the 1950s for its major clinical efficacy in gastric and duodenal ulceration.
